Short daily mileage, moderate elevation gain, and well-maintained trails make this ideal for first-time backpackers or families with older kids. You get the granite, the alpine water, and the stars without destroying your knees.

Water: Twin Lakes, Boomerang Lake, Island Lake

Short hike in past Twin Lakes and Boomerang Lake to Island Lake. Trail is well-signed early but transitions to granite slabs — follow rock cairns. Several great campsites along the north shore of Island Lake with views of the Crystal Range.

Water: Island Lake

Leave camp intact and day hike off-trail to the notch just north of Mount Price for sweeping views of Lake Aloha. All off-trail scrambling — comfortable route finding required. Snow possible on the north-facing slope near the notch. Can be skipped if time only allows a 1-night trip — head out Day 2 instead.

Water: Island Lake, Twin Lakes, streams

Retrace back to the trailhead past Twin Lakes. Mostly downhill. Rinse off at Wright's Lake at the trailhead.
