Mississippi Lake

Henry Coe's more difficult trip for when Coit Lake isn't enough. More remote and more challenging. Great option for spring trips before the mountains thaw out.

Description

The bigger, burlier Henry Coe trip, Mississippi Lake pushes deeper into the park's backcountry: more remote, more challenging, more rewarding. The descent into and climb out of Coyote Creek will test your quads.

Day by day

Day 1
HQ EntranceMississippi Lake
12 mi+3,000/-3,500 ft gain

Water: China Hole, Mississippi Lake

Long haul through classic Henry Coe terrain — rolling oak woodland, exposed ridgelines, and The Narrows (a cool, shaded creek section mid-route). Pace carefully; the total elevation change of 6,500ft is deceptive on a map.

Day 2
Mississippi LakeMississippi Lake
0 mi+0/-0 ft gain

Water: Mississippi Lake

Rest day at Mississippi Lake — fish for bass and bluegill, explore the shoreline, or day hike to nearby China Hole. One of the most remote lakes in the Bay Area's backcountry. Can be skipped if time only allows 2 nights.

Day 3
Mississippi LakeHQ Entrance
12 mi+3,000/-2,500 ft gain

Water: China Hole, seasonal streams

The return mirrors the approach — big elevation change on exposed terrain. Consider the alternate return via Willow Ridge if you want a different view, though it adds some mileage. Start early to avoid afternoon heat.

Notes

Very hot in summer; limited water in fall; designated campsites in western zones; wildflowers spectacular in spring; extendable for as many days as you'd like to spend at Mississippi Lake.
